A friend of mine who was in the business of supplying gymnasiums and state health clubs with exercise equipment recently confessed to me that he had spent the large part of his life barking up the wrong tree. I did not understand what he meant at first. As far as I could see, he spent a relatively small part of his day working to deliver orders to certain pre-qualified buyers. And each sale that he made resulted in a profit that was way above what I earned in a whole month. Especially after I had sweated night and day to achieve it. He led a good life, had all the comforts that money could buy and in general seemed to be having a jolly good time. So what exactly was he cribbing about?
When I asked him this, he ventured to explain. About three years ago, he had been approached by someone who claimed to be a medical equipment manufacturer. This person had expanded the scope of traditional exercise equipment and had actually converted it into something that he termed exercise equipment. It was quite simply exercise equipment that was intended to cater to specific medical conditions. For instance, there were grossly obese people who were advised against indulging in activities like running and the like as their feet could never hope to support their body weight. Such people were catered to with specialized medical equipment that helped them exercise. There were other people with heart diseases and ailments who could not indulge in cardio exercises. They too were catered to with specialized medical equipment that while helping them burn fat and exercise their bodies, did so without making them do any cardio exercises.
Now I understood what my friend had been saying all along. To his lack of understanding, medical equipment indicated just equipment that any medical facility would use. This would have included the likes of surgical equipment and pans, bed pans and the like. But never in his wildest dreams had he imagined that medical equipment meant exercise equipment that was branded and especially sold to medical and healthcare facilities after being branded in a certain manner. If only he had the foresight to do so, he would have made a killing in the medical equipment industry and would have become the immediate target of wealthy hospitals and wealthier patients who would have been seeking some such magical medical equipment for their use. But not being the first mover and consequently losing the advantage in the medical equipment field, he was mourning his loss.
