I never thought I would see the day, but it seems like knee socks are coming back. Every time I am passing a middle school, I see all the girls and all the boys wearing knee high socks. It is not only on the soccer field where knee high Argyle socks are popular. It is everywhere.
And not only are the kids wearing knee high socks. The parents are too. I have always thought the style was pathetic. I remember being a kid myself and being forced to wear knee high socks. I was brought up in a soccer family, you see, and was expected to play. Playing soccer meant having proper equipment. There was no room for negotiation. If you did not like soccer shorts, tough. If you did not like wearing soccer cleats, tough. Every piece of soccer equipment was viewed as completely essential. The knee high socks were every bit as important as were the soccer pads. The way my family saw it, it was all part of the game.
Now my daughter is coming home and asking for me to buy her knee high socks. I thought she should be happy with the socks that she has! I have allowed her to wear comfortable, gold toe socks for her whole life. She has never desires to wear knee high striped socks before. It is as if I offered to buy her a new sundress, and instead she wanted to buy a pair of trousers. I can't understand what she gets out of them. Then again, kids fashions have never made sense to me.
Even when I was a child, I never could understand things that were fashionable among my peers. Knee high socks seem strange now, but then again MC Hammer pants seemed strange in the 80s. All my friends wore Hyper Color shirts, but I never thought much of them. They looked so silly, changing temperature with the temperature of your body. I tried one on once, and it almost felt like being exposed. Knee high socks, on the other hand, are almost as quaint as suspenders. It is as if all the kids decided to dress up as old men. I can't understand what could possibly make knee high socks hip and young. Whatever the reason, it seems like over the calf socks are here to stay. I guess I had better get used to it. My daughter wants the socks.
