Lately all I have been seeing in the news is that celebrities are adopting children from some of the poorer countries of the world. They are leaving the US behind and finding children in the far reaches of the globe. I don’t have a problem with this in theory, but I do have a problem with the reasons behind what they are doing. Foreign adoption is a great idea, but there are times when you wonder why someone chose to go that way, and why the children of their own country are not good enough for them.
Those who are doing foreign adoption may say that I just don’t understand. I understand well enough. Sure, there are children all over the world that need homes, but why are celebrities doing this all of the sudden, and even more importantly, why is this big news? Foreign adoption happens all the time, so why is it only news when a celebrity does it? It seems to me that there is a matter of publicity behind the decision, and I don’t really care how much they deny it. I’m not stupid.
It’s great to think globally, but there are children in our own country that need a home too. Perhaps it’s just not as fashionable as foreign adoption, and perhaps there just aren’t any headlines to be made if a child were adopted from the US. Why is one child more needy than another? Sure, all of the circumstances are different, and there are different degrees of poverty, but a child is a child. Isn’t there a reason for the saying, “Charity begins at home?” Foreign adoption by a few celebrities I can understand and applaud, but all of them? Something smells fishy there to me.
If you aren’t a celebrity, foreign adoption might be very expensive, but it might be the only way you can get a newborn if that is what you are looking for. If you want older children, you might want to consider adopting some from your own country as well as consider going with foreign adoption. Children are children no matter where they come from, but let’s not forget the ones in our own country that need you just as much, or even more, than you may realize. I’m glad that the world is a smaller place, but I can’t help but feel like my country is so powerful it fixates on changing the world when perhaps we should take care of our own problems first. Nothing like a broken tractor trying to plow the field right?
