The electric fly swatter merges the bug zapper with the old-fashioned swat device that many of us know so well. This innovative invention is often bought as a kind of humorous gift or novelty item but the electric fly swatter really does do a great job. There are some pros and cons to this cute little killing machine.
The main problem that the electric fly swatter poses is that it is, well, electric. Absent-minded individuals may leave the device on in between uses. Since the unit is charged, it emits heat. This hot surface can damage furniture and it can burn skin as well.
I am aware of this particular drawback because I am one of those absent-minded individuals who have left the electric fly swatter on while it was not in use. The damage, I have to admit, was not substantial. The fact that the grid on the electric fly swatter does produce significant heat should be duly noted.
The electric fly swatter was a gag gift that I received from a friend who owned an outdoor bug zapper. I really hated the sounds that the poor little creatures made when they hit the machine. Ironically, I have no qualms about swatting a fly with a manual swatter at all.
The person who gave me the gift made sure to point out the irony in my distaste for the outdoor bug zapper. I have no qualms about swatting a bug out of existence manually but if there is electricity involved, I shudder. That is, until I tried the electric fly swatter for myself.
This device is pretty handy and it’s much more effective than the old fashioned manual unit that we all know. What’s even more interesting is that I am not bothered by using the electric fly swatter at all. In fact, it is one of the best gifts that I have received in awhile.
There may be a good reason that I find the outdoor bug zapper creepy. Bugs belong outside. I have no qualms using an electric fly swatter indoors because the insects have invaded my territory. While I cringe at the thought of frying a bug outside I really cringe at the thought of the bugs getting into my home.
So for now, I will have to keep my insect-removing devices indoors. I feel no guilt using my electric fly swatter in my home. I just won’t take the thing outdoors.
