Although many people are still not aware of it, digital rights management
is now almost everywhere. If you do not know what this digital content
management software is, think about the last time that you downloaded a
trial version of a program. What made it a trial version? It would
automatically deactivate after you had used it for a certain amount of
time, or after several days had passed. Unless you had the activation code
(which you would have to buy from the software company) you could not get
it to start again. That is just one of the many places where DRM digital
rights management is used to enforce property rights.
Media rights management technology is some of the most controversial tech
that is out today. Many people think that digital management rights is a
good thing because it allows copyright owners to keep possession of the
things that they make by stopping other people from copying it. This,
however, is not the whole story. There is much more to digital rights
management than simple copy protection. You see, the technology does not
work that well. It is very easy for anyone to remove digital rights
management if they know a little bit about how it works, and no one has
figured out how to fix this. Because the companies are worried about people
illegally copying digital rights management protected media, they push for
all kinds of draconian legislation. They want all computers to
automatically be set up with preserving digital rights management as the
central concern even if it means that they do not perform as well for the
user. They also want harsh, unfair punishments for people who are convicted
of illegally sharing files.
In my opinion, digital rights management will eventually fail. No matter
how much they work on getting the technology to protect files, there will
always be a digital rights management hack that someone comes up with to
compromise the file protection. The fact is that the days of digital right
management are numbered, and the companies who have business models which
depend on this technology will have to come up with a different way of
doing things. That is just how it goes. Every time technology advances,
society itself has to change quite a bit in order to keep up with it.
Digital rights management will never work, and The companies will have to
evolve or die.
