They are a hardy lot in Watauga County, a necessity in these parts during very harsh winters. The county seat is Boone North Carolina, a market town founded in 1872. It's surrounded by the scenic Appalachian Mountains, home of many a bluegrass musician. The Appalachian State University is situated in the town.
The town's name is taken from Daniel Boone, famous frontier explorer and soldier, who often camped out in the area. The story of Boone's exploits are told in a stage production called Horn In the West at the local outdoors theatre every year, a tradition going back to 1952. The drama takes place during the American Revolution from the years 1771 to 1780. The Boone North Carolina residents, numbering around 13,000 are proud of their heritage and the natural beauty of their state.
The Daniel Boone Native Gardens carries displays of local flaura and fauna for the public to enjoy and for educational establishments to visit for their botanical studies. Since opening in 1966, it has acquired an impressive collection of trees, shrubs mosses and wildflowers. These include beautiful magnolia and maple trees and rhododendron and azalea shrubs. There is also a wishing well, rockery, bog garden and a prayer shrine. A log cabin, of the type that Boone himself lived in at Boone North Carolina is also on view.
For a terrific view of the mountains, the best vantage point is Howard's Knob. This is the highest point overlooking the town and is named after an early British settler. The location became the subject of conflict when an experimental wind turbine, measuring 131 feet tall was constructed on top of the knoll in 1978. The local householders objected to the noise it made and complained of vibrating windows. They also said it interfered with their television reception. Not convinced of its worth, the residents of Boone North Carolina eventually won the day and the turbine was taken down in 1983.
Children and families in the region like to go to the Tweetsie Railroad, which is the site for a theme park. Visitors can ride on a real steam train and there are amusements such as a ferris wheel, go-carts and a carousel. There is also a deer park on the site. Boone North Carolina has an interesting history, in a scenic area steeped in tradition, where the locals feel that living there is worth enduring the winter conditions.
